Beauty will save the world.
So says the oft-quoted Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky. His claim is that of the three transcendentals – truth, goodness, and beauty – the thing in the end that will save man’s soul is beauty.
And it’s easy to see why. In our current culture, truth has become relative and goodness irrelevant to most people. But no one can deny the beauty of a sunset, of a piece of great music, of the intricate architecture of a great Cathedral.
